Umbrella Planet's Commitment to Aboriginal Engagement
Acknowledgement of Country
At Umbrella Planet, we respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands throughout Australia where we live and work. In particular, we believe the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land stands our head office in the Sydney CBD. We honour and cherish their continuing connection to land, sea, and community, one of over 80,000 years, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
The acknowledgement does not stop at a mere statement; it expresses our genuine commitment to acknowledging and valuing the strong culture of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their stories, cultures, and knowledge systems are embedded in and form the spirit and identity of Australia. Therefore, our absolute responsibility is to facilitate this existence through meaningful actions and engagement.
Collaboration With Indigenous Artist Julianne Wade
In line with our efforts to promote Aboriginal culture, Umbrella Planet is thrilled to partner with Julianne Wade, a Whadjuk Noongar artist based in Perth. Underpinning all of Julianne's work is a personal and ancestral connection to the rich cultural Country. She expresses an ancient storytelling tradition through her work in a single image that speaks to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal audiences.
This partnership enables businesses to acquire bespoke artwork that will be finely placed into promotional items such as classic branded mugs, gift boxes, wellness items, etc. These displays are more than just enticing; they have a cultural ring which allows organizations to offer authentic support for Aboriginal heritage, reflected through their branded materials.
This is not the same level as our standard graphic design offer. It offers more than that: it provides the experience for Julianne's artwork and our two decades' worth of merchandising expertise, thus enabling clients to enhance their corporate identity without hot air and uplifting Indigenous culture.
Cultural Commitment and Education
Sound learning of Aboriginal history and culture creates a solid foundation for working with great respect and responsibility in the modern-day context in which business is transacted. Each year, staff members participate in cultural awareness training in structured formats to develop understanding and interaction.
The topics include Aboriginal history, community values, and contemporary challenges confronting Indigenous Australians today. Attending, listening, learning, and reflecting are essential to improving and applying cultural competency with customers and communities.
Education programs and other initiatives shall be subsumed into the broader inclusion framework, which helps support diversity in all forms and ensures that each employee moves through this set of arrangements feeling educated and empowered in contributing to a culture of respect and inclusion.
Promoting Inclusion and Ethical Engagement
Umbrella Planet encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for opportunities in our teams. All operational and leadership positions are open to Indigenous people. Diversity within our team enriches and strengthens our subsequent ability to serve an increasingly broad customer base.
As per the Ethical Sourcing Policy, collaborative endeavours—with particular emphasis on involving Aboriginal content or creators—should be strictly taken straight and through mutual respect. This includes fair payment and attribution of cultural works and ongoing consultations to agree with partners on how they would consider their voices to be reflected in each project.
